How to Choose a Business Phone System

A business line does two things a cell phone does not: it survives you changing phones, and it can be answered by someone other than you.

Start with how calls actually reach you

Do calls come in while you are working? A contractor on a roof and a dentist mid-appointment have the same problem and need the same fix.
How many people answer? One person needs a number. Three people need extensions and routing.
What happens after hours? Voicemail loses jobs. An answering service or AI receptionist does not.

The four pieces most businesses need

A dedicated business number. Keeps your personal cell private and lets you hand the line to someone else later without telling every customer a new number.
Call routing. Rings the right person, or rings several in order, instead of dumping to voicemail.
Texting. Customers text now. A business texting line gets read faster than email.
Call tracking. Tells you which ad or listing produced the call, so you stop paying for the ones that do not.

Questions to ask before you buy

Can I keep this number if I switch providers? Number portability matters more than any feature.
What happens if my internet goes down? Ask about failover to a cell number.
Is there a per-minute charge, or is it flat? Per-minute pricing punishes a good month.
How many users are included? Per-seat pricing adds up as you hire.
